How do nail lasers work?

The laser kills fungus that lives in and under the nail. The laser light passes through the nail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear – it takes time to grow out.

Here are some before and after examples
Before and after nail laser treatment

Most patients feel no pain. Some may feel a warming sensation. An isolated few may feel a slight pinprick. No recovery period is needed and you can paint your nails again straight away – although you need to make sure they are clear of all varnish before the procedure begins.

The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes. This does depend, though, on how many toes you are having treated. The infection improves after one treatment. However, there is a chance of reinfection because the fungus is present everywhere in the environment. We will recommend care techniques to help reduce a recurrence of the infection.

How long have nail lasers been in use?
We started treatments with the FootLaser from PinPointe, which was approved by medical authorities following clinical studies that began in November 2007.

More recently, we have also been using the more advanced Lunula Laser, by medical laser specialist Erchonia. This arrived on the market in 2013.

The PinPointe is a heat-based laser whereas the newer Lunula laser is a cold laser. It works using two different wavelengths to target two different types of fungal cell.

The benefits of using laser treatment
There are no medicinal side-effect risks, as can be the case with oral medication. Skin-applied treatments require many applications over a long period of time, whereas the laser nail treatment is quick and clean. Each session takes just 30 minutes, after which you can walk out of the clinic.

What happens at the appointment?
Before you come to your appointment, please make sure your nails are free of varnish and other adornments. The appointment is relaxing and the time it takes will depend on the number of toes you need treating – so you may want to bring a magazine. Once finished, you can walk as normal and re-paint your nails. The improvements will not be completely seen until the nail grows out. We will advise you about after-care to prevent reinfection.
